Virtual AND in-person visits this year

Visit in Person

On Sunday 26th September, we plan to open the gates from 9am till 5pm and to have music, art and refreshments from 12pm till 4pm. There is a children’s play park and dogs are welcome on a lead.

Music will be provided by the Edinburgh Gaelic Choir and local band We Travel in Hope. Up to ten community artists will sell their work at stalls and we will have on sale individually wrapped cakes/biscuits and tea/coffee.

There are no toilet facilities in the garden. There are public toilets in Stockbridge, but we cannot guarantee these will be open. There’s not much shelter in the garden, so if it rains – bring umbrellas!

We will be offering three tours per day (on Saturday 25th September and Sunday 26th). Each tour will have 12 spaces (assuming social distancing regulations have been removed)

The tours will take place at 09.30, 12.15 and 15.00 and will last for a maximum of 2 hours each. Visitors will be expected to book on tours in advance using the Eventbrite booking form and bring their tickets with them.

Guests will be greeted by their tour guide, who will be a member of staff that works on the Seafield site. Their tour guide will usher them into a conference room, for induction and Personal Protective Equipment Provision.

Personal Protective Equipment will be provided to visitors and includes:

  • Hard hat
  • Safety Gloves (non-latex)
  • Safety Glasses
  • Boots

All visitors are advised to wear sensible footwear (sturdy, fully covered, flat). If visitors have their own safety boots, they are more than welcome to bring them.

After the induction process, visitors will be shown a short educational video and opportunities for initial questions. Questions can of course be asked throughout the remaining tour.

It is a requirement that visitors remain with their tour guide at all times and obey all instructions that they are given by them. This is to ensure visitors safety, as Seafield WWTW remains an operational site. A tour will be terminated immediately, if a visitor does not stay with their guide/host.

We will clearly be adhering to any Govt Regulations regarding Covid-19 and will make all visitors aware of our Covid processes nearer the time, as these may be subject to change.

As Seafield WWTW is an operational site, guided tours ONLY will be offered to interested members of the public as part of Doors Open Days.

Ticket Information
Visitors will be expected to present tickets at the front gate. Visitors who do not have tickets will be turned away at the front gate.

Arrival Time
It is suggested that visitors arrive no more than 15 minutes before their tour.

ADDITIONAL VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION
The entrance to Seafield WWTW is situated approximately 200m along Marine Esplanade. There is a large red gate for vehicles and smaller pedestrian access gate next to this. For visitors arriving on foot it is very important that they stay on the pavement closest to the waste water treatment works, as Marine Esplanade is a busy road with large vehicles travelling along it at speed. A Veolia member of staff will be at the front gate to greet visitors and ensure their safety.

Any visitors that arrive early for their tour will be asked to stay in their cars until their tour is ready. If they have arrived by foot, they will be asked to return nearer the time of their tour.

Doors Open Days activities will take place in the gardens around Preston Tower and Doocot on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th September from 11am to 3pm.

Come along to the Tower gardens to join in with any of the activities, music, talks and find out more about the proposed developments. No booking required.

The weekend includes:

  • A stonemasonry workshop with local stonemason Gardner Molloy (both days).
  • Scottish Castles storytelling and a children’s craft activity with community librarian Mark Jamieson (Saturday).
  • Live acoustic music from local musicians Gary Coupland and Anna Scott  (Sunday)
  • Updates on the ongoing project to repair Preston Tower and Doocot from architect Natasha Huq (Sunday) and from heritage consultant Lyndsey Clark (heritage consultant) and interpretation designer Stephen Kirkpatrick (both days).
  • Giant Jenga for everyone to play with and build a tower.
  • A photographic display showing internal, external and aerial views of Preston Tower as well as new plans to improve access to the adjacent garden.
  • Tower gardens ideas prints – what would you like to see at the end of the new path in the garden.
  • A video collage of the on-going project at Preston Tower Garden, showing internal images, views from the tower and drone footage around the tower.
  • East Lothian Playrangers activities (Sunday)

Please note that access inside Preston Tower and Doocot will not be available to the public at this time, but come and hear about the plans in progress to secure access to both in the near future.

Prestonpans train station (on the North Berwick line) is just a five minute walk away and the No.26 (Clerwood-Tranent) Lothian bus service stops even closer still just outside Hamilton House on West Loan.

If you plan to come by car, please park in the nearby Prestonpans Community Centre car park (see map below).
