Open Doors, Open Stories: Might you be able to help unlock Scotland this September?

POSTED ON June 5, 2026 BY James Garry

Discover hidden places, shared stories and new perspectives this September

Every September, something remarkable happens across Scotland. Doors open — and with them, possibilities open too. Not just the grand civic buildings or famous landmarks; studios, offices, churches, temples, gardens, and even wind turbines, open their doors and gates for free. For one glorious weekend, barriers quietly disappear and curiosity abounds.

Founded in France in 1984, to enable free civic access to buildings normally closed to the public, the concept has spread across Europe and the Americas, arriving in the UK in Glasgow in 1990 when the city celebrated its status as European City of Culture. Today, the Scottish Civic Trust coordinates Doors Open Days through a network of regional coordinators with the Cockburn responsible for Edinburgh and East Lothian’s festivities.

‘Doors Open Days’ has grown into Scotland’s largest free heritage festival. Last year, more than 950 venues took part — celebrating Scotland’s people, places and stories — each offering something special to visitors eager to discover the buildings, landscapes, and histories on their doorstep. Unlike much of our cultural offer, this festival is squarely aimed at residents. With hundreds of free in-person and online experiences covering a plethora of interests from advanced manufacturing to historic churches, there’s always something new to discover in the programme, even after a lifetime of dedicated study.

As longstanding champions of Edinburgh’s citizens’ right to high quality cultural experiences, the Cockburn wants communities across Edinburgh and East Lothian to see their home from a different perspective, or experience something new, cultivating a greater sense of both ownership and pride. We want our venue hosts to get validation for their civic contribution, to build and strengthen networks, to engage new audiences, recruit new volunteers and gain skills and confidence throughout. Ultimately, we want Doors Open Days 2026 to bring communities together, to share a more nuanced story and offer across the region, breaking down barriers and enabling our communities to thrive.

Coordinating Doors Open Days in a region afflicted by over-tourism, we feel it is of vital importance that residents benefit from our rich cultural landscape and reap the health and wellbeing benefits of engagement with the arts. We’re undertaking research in partnership with Santiago di Compostella, and Loughborough (London) Universities to understand the impact of tourism in Edinburgh and highlight the domestic and international case studies of tourism-driven community benefit (thank you to those who joined us for the preliminary findings at the City Chambers on the 12th May as part of the Festival of Europe). We believe that Doors Open Days plays an integral role in achieving the New Economics Foundation’s (NEF’s) Five Ways to Wellbeing:

Edinburgh and East Lothian Doors Open Days returns on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September 2026, and planning is already well underway.

How you can help:

  • We’re currently fundraising to send a Doors Open Day invitation to every Primary School Child in Edinburgh & East Lothian. The estimated cost of this venture is £15k and we need to hit our target by 31st July to ensure ample time for production and distribution. Please donate here: cockburnassociation.org.uk/product/donate-dod
  • Volunteer for the Cockburn: We’ll be recruiting volunteers to support evaluation, social media, fundraising and venue support. If you’d like to hear more, we made this google sheets for you to register your interest: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfO-0tSPD9OQKaJ9iY5FMZWc0Sc7xUiYvyxRfT4L3vh7YfT6A/viewform?usp=header
  • Volunteer your venue: This year’s theme is Heritage at Risk: Revive, Resist, Reimagine — an invitation to explore how we protect the places we love, adapt buildings to new uses, and respond to the pressures facing historic places today. Taking part in the theme is encouraged, but it’s not required. We’ll run an online drop-in for interested venue volunteers on September. Contact admin@cockburnassociation.org.uk if interested.

The Scottish Civic Trust has produced lots of resources which you can access here and you can sign up directly using the link below:

Venues Commit to:

  • Open for a minimum of 2 hours during the festival weekend of 26–27 September 2026
  • Offer activities free of charge
  • Include something a little extra — something different from the usual visitor experience

That’s it. No complicated requirements, no need for a huge team. Just a willingness to open your doors and share what makes your place special.

Your place belongs in this

Edinburgh and East Lothian are full of extraordinary places — historic and contemporary, grand and humble, famous and completely overlooked. Doors Open Days is your chance to share yours.

Because sometimes opening a door opens much more than a building.

It opens stories. Conversations. Connections. And occasionally, an entirely new way of seeing the place we call home.

Applications for Edinburgh and East Lothian Doors Open Days 2026 are open now. We’d love your venue to be part of it.
