Museum Collections Centre (Museums & Galleries Edinburgh)

The Museums Collections Centre, one of a portfolio of venues managed by Museums and Galleries Edinburgh, is an amazing treasure trove of objects spanning a wide range of subjects. The bulk of our reserve collections, not currently on display are stored here, and it is where we also have research and conservation facilities.

The Collection Centre is at the heart of our latest project, Auld Reekie Retold, the biggest collections project ever undertaken by Museums & Galleries Edinburgh.

Our curatorial and collections team are working through over 200,000 objects in stores across the City, checking records, photographing objects and researching the stories which bring the City’s collections to life. The aim of the project is to better understand these objects so that we can preserve them for the future and find new ways to interpret them, with and for the people of Edinburgh.

While we cannot sadly open for in-person Doors Open Days tours of the Centre this year our Museum Collections Centre have filmed the short tour below especially for this year’s event. We hope you enjoy your virtual visit!
