In an 1820s mews flat in Brunswick Street Lane, just off Montgomery Street, lies the clubrooms for the amateur drama group, The Edinburgh Makars.

Designed by William Henry Playfair, this part of the new development was known as the East New Town. The Edinburgh Makars themselves were established in 1996 with the amalgamation of two drama clubs: The Makars and the Davidson’s Mains Dramatic Society.

In regular times it puts on two full-length plays, alongside other smaller events and club nights. During the pandemic, the Club has been keeping itself going through lockdown with online play readings and an involvement with the SCDA online playwriting and performing.

We have not been able to use our building for meetings or rehearsals at all due to the restrictions but are looking forward to gradually bringing activities back to Brunswick Street Lane. We are excited to welcome back old faces and new to our premises in the near future.

In the meantime, you can find out more about our building and club in our virtual visit video below created specifically for Doors Open Days.
