Cammo Estate a local nature reserve managed by the City of Edinburgh Council. It was once a flourishing Country House estate with a large Mansion House and large, well designed, fashionable gardens. These included an ornamental canal, walled garden with ‘hot walls’ and a Pinetum. It is popular place for local people to walk, often with their dogs. Many of these visitors are unaware of the layers of history around them.
Since 2017 Edinburgh Archaeological Field Society (EAFS) have been investigating the history and archaeology of the Estate. Using Geophysics and excavation techniques this group of dedicated volunteers have uncovered many of the secrets that lay hidden beneath the deep layers of rubble and ivy. They have been able to tell more of the story of the people who lived and worked on the Estate. Not just the gentry in the ‘Big House’ but also those less well documented souls who laboured to keep them in grand style.
Over Doors Open Days weekend EAFS would like to invite members of the public to visit Cammo Estate and learn more about its fascinating history. Guided walks will show the hidden history and explain how it has been uncovered.
If you can’t make it along in person we will be hosting a recording of a virtual tour on our website and our YouTube page. You might also enjoy below a “virtual visit” to the talk about our ongoing work at Cammo delivered by one of our members at a recent public archaeology conference.
Visit in Person
We’ll be participating in Doors Open Days weekend on Sunday 26th September when our volunteers will be offering guided walks every hour from 10.00am to 4pm. An exhibition of recent archaeological finds will also be on display at the Cammo Estate Visitor Centre.
Starting at the Visitor Centre, at the entrance to the Estate on Cammo Road, these walks will last approximately two hours. The route around the Cammo Estate will be on paths for much of this time, but sensible footwear would be required.
In order that each group is kept to a manageable size, participation in a tour must be pre-booked at the link below.
