Tour of St Patrick’s Church and surrounding streets

Multiple Dates

St Patrick’s Church on the Cowgate is a unique building offering a glimpse into centuries of religious history and cultural change in the heart of Edinburgh. Originally a sumptuous Episcopal chapel opened in 1774, it passed through the hands of Presbyterian congregations before being rededicated in honour of St Patrick in 1856 to serve the Irish Catholic community.

Join us for tours of the church to learn about its rich history and the nearby Catholic sites. You will hear about:

  • The history and architecture of St Patrick’s Church;
  • The Venerable Margaret Sinclair (hopefully Scotland’s next Catholic saint);
  • The Founding of Hibernian Football Club by parish priest Canon Hannan in 1875
  • plus: Cardinal Beaton’s residence, the Blackfriars Monastery, St Philip Neri and the Oratory, James Connolly, and more!

Dates: Friday 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th August at 7pm. (An Italian tour will also be available on Friday 29th)

Meeting place: Outside the main doors of the church.

This is a free event, but donations are appreciated towards the building fund for maintenance of this beautiful building. All welcome!
