St. Cecilia’s Hall – Remembering Robert Fergusson

Thu 17 Oct 2024

This event will be a night filled with poetry readings, musical performances, and discussions about Fergusson’s impact on Scottish literature. Join special guests, Scottish writer and broadcaster Billy Kay, authors Andrew O’Hagan and James Robertson and musician Kirsteen McCue with Professor Rhona Brown to celebrate Robert Fergusson on the 250th anniversary of his death. Rhona leads on the University of Glasgow project exploring Fergusson’s work and legacy.

Robert Fergusson died 250 years ago at the tender age of 24. His poetry in Scots was beloved by Robert Burns and Robert Louis Stevenson, who contributed to the poet’s grave and its headstone’s repair. Visitors to the poetry library will often pass by the cemetery gates of Canongate Churchyard on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, where there is a much loved and photographed statue honouring Fergusson by sculptor David Annand.
