Four Centuries of Edinburgh Furniture-Making

Thursday, September 25

September Lecture is presented by Stephen Jackson and explores four centuries of objects from the National Museum and NTS properties.

Furniture-making has a rich and continuous history in Edinburgh from the carved oak made for Gladstone’s Land, and the refined mahogany of the New Town, to the output of once famous Victorian firms such as Taylor and Son, Scott Morton, and Whytock and Reid. This lecture will cover the entire panoply including work by Francis Brodie (father of the infamous Deacon) and the Regency Lord Provost, William Trotter.

Stephen Jackson is Senior Curator, Furniture and Woodwork at National Museums Scotland. He will illustrate his lecture with objects from the National Museum, NTS properties and other collections.

Tea and coffee refreshments included in ticket price.
