The Lyell Centre

Staff from the British Geological Survey and Heriot-Watt University work at the Lyell Centre, which is a partnership between the two organisations. This enables us to work together combining our expertise in land and marine geoscience.
We explore themes ranging from geology and geophysics to marine ecosystems, employing innovative methods and technologies, applying them to society’s most important environmental science and energy challenges.
We’re not open for in person visits this year, but please enjoy a brief virtual visit below then have a look at our Doors Open Days website (specially created last year for the first digital Doors Open Days) and join us for some ‘behind the scenes’ tours in our Marine Operations area and Core Store; find out what a ‘lander’ does; and to learn about the Earth’s magnetic field, the Krafla magma testbed in Iceland and other intriguing geoscience.
