Bridgend Farmhouse

Bridgend Farmhouse is a typical 18th century farm building and was a working farm until the 1970s. Over the last five years it’s been restored and is now a community centre. It was one of the first “urban asset transfers” in which the City Council passed ownership of the land and buildings to the local community. It’s now owned by 400 local shareholders.

The building was renovated, keeping many original features, with the aid of grants from the National Lottery and Historic Environment Scotland. It now has a training kitchen and cafe, an exhibition room, a series of workshops for woodwork, bike maintence and arts and crafts, We have almost completed our most recent project, an eco-bothy with straw bale walls and a grass roof.

The ethos of Bridgend Farmhouse is “community.” We are owned and controlled by the community around us. We want to provide local people with new skills, healthy food and outdoor exercise in our local woodland, Craigmillar Castle Park. It’s a place to volunteer and find friendship.
