The 1722 Waggonway Heritage Centre celebrates Scotland’s oldest railway route – 300 years old in 2022. The centre’s museum features archaeological artefacts, models, maps, plans and photographs, as well as Cadell’s Office and William Dickson’s Workshop.
Celebrate Scotland’s Year of Coasts and Waters by visiting us near Cockenzie Harbour, where salt and coal was produced and shipped since mediaeval times, trading to Hanseatic ports and beyond.

All COVID protocols will be in place in our wide open, well-ventilated museum. Guided walks may be possible at 11am and 2pm, depending on COVID restrictions at the time.

We’ll be opening to Doors Open Days visitors on both Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th September from 10am to 3pm.
We will recently have finished archaeological excavations on Scotland’s earliest wooden railway and a nearby 17th century salt pan house – visitors will be able to find out what we found during these digs!
We are able to welcome Doors Open Days visitors without difficulty, with Covid-safety measures in place and our big doors wide open to create a well-ventilated and hospitable environment for visitors.
Free guided tours of the local historical locations will also hopefully take place on both days at 11am and 2pm.
WCs will be unavailable to the public, due to areas such as these being higher Covid-risk environments.
