Compliance with the Equality Act must be demonstrated.
Cockburn Association ( Edinburgh’s Civic Trust) TRO (RSO/21/08) Objection
The Cockburn Association is wholly supportive of the overarching objective of the Meadows to George Street project: to transform cycling, walking, public spaces and accessibility for all on in the City Centre area, thereby improving both the health and wellbeing of users and reducing motor vehicle journeys in the area. However, we have serious reservations regarding the detail of the scheme as outlined by the current TPO ((RSO/21/08) which includes much more detailed information on proposed interventions than has been publicly consulted on hitherto.
- It appears to us that many of the proposed arrangements are inherently unsafe, especially ‘floating’ bus stops
- Poorly planned 2-way cycle lanes take up too much roadway on narrow streets and future conflicts between all road users (including pedestrians) may be unavoidable as a result
- We have serious reservations about closing North Bank Street to general traffic at this time
- The proposed bus gate and ‘shuffle’ arrangements are, we believe, unworkable and will lead to inevitable conflicts at a busy junction
- Plans for Forrest Road are a missed placemaking opportunity
- Cockburn stakeholders have voiced significant concerns regarding the TPO’s impact on carers, on the equal access and on older and disabled residents more generally . These concerns require urgent consideration. Clear and explicit compliance with the requirements of the Equality Act must be demonstrated.
Many of these points were raised by us during earlier consultation stages of this project . But our concerns do not seem to be reflected in the current TPO.
