Ornaments and Obelisks: Changes at Tyninghame in the Early 19th Century

Mon, 14 Nov 2022

With the help of previously unpublished archival material, Judy Riley explores the development of Tyninghame House and gardens, in East Lothian, around the first half of the nineteenth century. She highlights the largely unrecorded changes to the landscape made by the 7th and 8th Earls of Haddington, including the addition of a copy of a 17th century sundial from Newbattle Abbey, before assessing William Burn’s remodelling of both house and garden for the 9th Earl. Her book, Tyninghame – Landscapes and Lives, was published by Birlinn in May 2022. This is a joint lecture with Scotland’s Garden and Landscape Heritage.
