Decolonising Home and Belonging: Olivia Umurerwa Rutazibwa
Mon, 11 July 2022
The talk invites a conversation on what decolonial discourses and practices of “home” and “belonging” could look like.
I build on narratives of my experiences as second generation Rwandan from Antwerp, Belgium and on post- and decolonial, anti-racist scholarship to address some of the overarching themes and topics of the conference: the toppling of statutes (e.g. Leopold II) and traditions (e.g. Zwarte Piet), technologies of inclusion and exclusion (language, the headscarf) including claims of indigeneity (i.c. autochtoon-allochtoon) that sound radically different than those developed in settler colonial contexts.
